The 1851 Baldwin & Co. $10 Gold Coin holds a revered place in numismatic history as a relic from the vibrant era of the California Gold Rush. Struck by Baldwin & Company, a prominent private mint in San Francisco during the mid-19th century, this coin is an embodiment of the frenzied quest for gold in the American West.

Crafted from gold sourced from the rich California mines, these coins bear the iconic design of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word "Liberty" on the obverse, while the reverse showcases the majestic bald eagle, wings outstretched. Each coin's unique surface, touched by time and history, often displays varying degrees of wear, adding character and a sense of authenticity to every piece.

Beyond its monetary value, these coins evoke the spirit of an era defined by adventure, opportunity, and aspiration. They serve as a tangible link to an extraordinary period in American history when fortunes were made, and dreams chased in the untamed landscapes of the West.

As a relic from the fabled Gold Rush, the 1851 Baldwin & Co. $10 Gold Coin is not just a numismatic treasure but a tangible piece of the pioneering spirit that shaped the American narrative.

Determining the exact number of surviving specimens presents a real challenge to numismatists, but census reports by both NGC and PCGS, along with auction appearances, provide us confirmation that they are excessively rare. Initially, these coins were minted in limited quantities. The majority were melted down for their gold content over time.

Collectors, historians, and numismatists have meticulously studied these coins, estimating surviving quantities based on several factors. These can include surviving records, auction appearances, and private collections. The census reports by NGC and PCGS list a total certified population of only 16 specimens, 7 at NGC and 9 at PCGS. It is most certain that these numbers are embellished by multiple submissions of the same coin. Of these, only 4 coins are in the mint-state category. NGC has graded two MS60 specimens and one MS62. PCGS shows only one coin grading MS61.

Considering the scarcity and historical significance of these coins, collectors and enthusiasts have a keen interest in documenting and preserving them. The following are the auction prices realized over a long period of time.

January 2013 – HA Sale – NGC AU58 – $99,875

January 2014 – HA Sale – PCGS AU55 – $88,125

April 2014 – HA Sale – PCGS MS61 – $235,000
