SS Brother Jonathon Coins

SS Brother Jonathan coins refer to a collection of rare gold coins salvaged from the wreck of the SS Brother Jonathan, a steamship that sank off the coast of Northern California in 1865. The ship was in route to Portland, Oregon, carrying passengers, crew, and a significant cargo of gold coins and other valuables. A total of 21 treasure chests were on board, but the ship hit an uncharted rock, causing it to sink with the loss of over 200 lives.

In 1996, a team of divers successfully recovered over 1,000 gold coins, primarily $20 Double Eagles minted in San Francisco during the mid-1800s. These coins are highly sought after by collectors due to their historical significance, rarity, and exceptional preservation. Each coin offers a glimpse into the maritime and economic history of the California Gold Rush era, making them an intriguing part of American numismatic heritage.
