SS Republic Artifacts

The SS Republic artifacts are historical treasures recovered from the wreck of a 19th-century steamship that sank in 1865 off the coast of Georgia during a hurricane. Originally in route from New York to New Orleans, the SS Republic carried a large cargo of gold and silver coins, goods, and provisions intended to help the South rebuild after the Civil War. Discovered in 2003 by Odyssey Marine Exploration, the shipwreck yielded an impressive collection of artifacts, including a large number of coins, bottles, dishware, and personal items.

These artifacts provide a unique glimpse into post-Civil War commerce and daily life in the United States. The preserved items offer significant historical and monetary value, attracting interest from historians, collectors and investors. The SS Republic’s cargo not only reflects the challenges of the Reconstruction era but also serves as a tangible connection to the past, revealing stories of trade at that time.
