On the ½ Oklahoma Goldback, the virtue Honestas—Honor—takes form in the figure of a fearless young cowgirl driving cattle along the legendary Chisholm Trail. Set near Red River Station, this scene captures the rugged authenticity of Oklahoma’s role in post-Civil War cattle drives. The trail, formally established in 1867, brought millions of longhorns through Indian Territory on their way to rail lines in Kansas.
The cowgirl, poised and unwavering, leads a herd of longhorns branded with “1867.” Her lasso is mid-swing, her gaze fixed, and her resolve firm. She embodies not only the physical strength required to survive the trail, but the internal strength of doing the job with integrity—even when no one is watching. The Chisholm Trail marker beside her and a wagon wheel buried in the dust remind us that honor is carved into the land itself.
Above, a hawk soars, a symbol of vigilance and freedom. Along her sash is inscribed “Honestas,” while Colossians 3:23 grounds the piece with these words: “Whatever you do, do it heartily.” This is more than a scene of history; it’s a tribute to the enduring values of hard work and personal integrity that live on in the heart of every true Oklahoman.
