10 Utah Goldback – Justitia (Justice)
The 10 Utah Goldback honors the virtue of Justitia, or Justice, depicted in a scene inspired by the iconic landscapes of southern Utah. Clad in traditional Sunday attire from the early pioneer era, she stands with dignified authority before the region’s red rock formations and the striking Balancing Rock. Her imagery is rooted in classical symbolism: she wears a blindfold to represent impartiality, carries balanced scales in one hand to signify fairness, and wields a double-edged sword in the other—denoting the decisive power of justice to both protect and correct.
Etched at her feet is the guiding phrase: “Judge Righteously.” The scales she holds are adorned with a cross, heart, and anchor, representing the vital interplay of faith, hope, and charity—essential companions to true justice, which must temper judgment with mercy.
Above her, a seagull—the state bird of Utah—soars with a cricket in its beak, a direct allusion to the legendary “Miracle of the Gulls,” when these birds devoured invasive crickets threatening pioneer crops. In the distance, a desert storm brews, symbolizing divine justice through both challenge and deliverance. This imagery recalls another historical moment: when a long drought ended after settlers united in fasting and prayer. These vignettes speak to the dual nature of justice—the same sword that enforces law also brings blessings when wielded with righteousness.
In the foreground, nestled among the sagebrush, a sage hen protects her twelve chicks. This tender scene mirrors the nurturing aspect of justice and draws on biblical themes of protection and mercy—justice as a mother gathering her children beneath her wings.
