Her imagery is rooted in classical symbolism: she wears a blindfold to represent impartiality, carries balanced scales in one hand to signify fairness, and wields a double-edged sword in the other—denoting the decisive power of justice to both protect and correct.
Etched at her feet is the guiding phrase: “Judge Righteously.” The scales she holds are adorned with a cross, heart, and anchor, representing the vital interplay of faith, hope, and charity—essential companions to true justice, which must temper judgment with mercy.
Above her, a seagull—the state bird of Utah—soars with a cricket in its beak, a direct allusion to the legendary “Miracle of the Gulls,” when these birds devoured invasive crickets threatening pioneer crops. In the distance, a desert storm brews, symbolizing divine justice through both challenge and deliverance.
