Vespasian (69-79 AD)

Titus Flavius Vespasianus was born from humble beginnings in 9 AD, during the early years of the Roman Empire, where his parents were of equestrian rank in the Sabine region of Italy, with political ties.

In his early life, Vespasian rose through the ranks of civil-military service and went on to become a successful military commander. He became the tenth Caesar of Rome at the age of sixty from AD 69 to 79, after the killing of Vitellius. He was the last Emperor in the year of the โ€˜Year of the Four Emperors.โ€™

Vespasian was a highly competent loyal Emperor, known for his great energy, humor, humility, and common sense.

He was a great reformer and a major builder of the Roman Empire, responsible for several important architectural projects, most notably the beginning of construction on the Roman Colosseum (also called the Flavian Amphitheater), as Vespasian had a love for gladiatorial games.

He enjoyed 10 years of politics and prosperity and died in June, AD 79 at 69 years old after falling ill. His last words were, โ€œDear me, I think Iโ€™m becoming a God.โ€ His two sons, Titus, and Domitian would succeed him.

In the process of restoring prosperity to the Empire, Vespasian struck a great many coins in gold, silver and copper. Coins struck during his long reign served as propaganda throughout the Empire, depicting images of military victory and peace. His gold and silver coins are the best of the best and have the greatest scalability in all of numismatics.
