The Oklahoma 50 Goldback honors Vigilantia, or Vigilance, through the image of a woman confronting one of nature’s greatest forces with composure and curiosity. In the heart of Tornado Alley, she kneels in the tall grass as a tornado spirals in the distance, lightning splits the sky, and wind sweeps the plains. Yet she remains focused, capturing the moment through her camera. She represents Oklahoma’s courage, resilience, and the will to understand rather than fear.
This piece is also a tribute to the scientists, researchers, and storm chasers who make Oklahoma a global leader in meteorology. The scene includes critical tools of the trade: a Doppler on Wheels unit, a mobile mesonet vehicle, and a weather balloon. These technologies were central to groundbreaking initiatives like the VORTEX missions, which helped decode the origins of tornado formation and improved early warning systems across the country.
In the foreground, the woman’s gear case is marked “Vigilantia,” a quiet but firm declaration of the virtue she embodies. Her presence reflects not just scientific curiosity, but the bravery and steadiness required to stand firm while others seek shelter.
Oklahoma faces more than 60 tornadoes per year. But it is in the wake of each storm that the state’s true character is revealed. Communities unite. Neighbors become responders. Hardship builds strength. The scripture inscribed at the bottom captures this spirit: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13.
