1 Nevada Goldback – Caritas (Charity)
The 1 Nevada Goldback features Caritas, the Virtue of Charity, making her first appearance in the Goldback series. Inspired by a depiction of Mary from St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Austin—Nevada’s oldest Catholic church—this design reflects the state’s rich religious heritage. The artwork is filled with layered symbolism: the Sierra Nevada Lily and Mary Magdalene Rose sit in containers at her feet, cherubs crown her figure, and she holds a lit candle as the Nevada sun rises behind her.
Architectural elements, like the window and columns, draw influence from St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City. Hidden within the design are meaningful symbols, including a square, compass, wagon wheel, rosary beads, and the word “Love.” Additional details include an ash tree representing marriage (a nod to Las Vegas’s reputation), and a family of ring-necked pheasants symbolizing selfless devotion and care.
