50 New Hampshire Goldback – Libertas (Liberty)
The 50 New Hampshire Goldback showcases Libertas, or Liberty, in her commanding and symbolic culmination of the state’s Goldback series. Standing amidst the towering pines of White Mountain National Forest, she personifies the foundational ideals of freedom and unity. Her image integrates core elements from New Hampshire’s original colonial seal, including the bundle of five arrows she carries—representing the five original counties—the fish embroidered on her gown, denoting the colony’s maritime economy, and the eastern white pine, a treasured natural resource vital to shipbuilding and commerce.
At the hem of her dress is stitched the Latin phrase “Vis Unitas Fortior”, meaning “A United Force is Stronger.” This timeless principle underscores the necessity of collective strength and harmony, especially in the defense and preservation of liberty. Around her neck, Libertas wears a medallion bearing the torch of liberty and a laurel wreath—both drawn from classical symbols of enlightenment and honor. Beneath her is inscribed the call to action: “Stand Fast in Liberty.”
The scene also depicts a family of whitetail deer, the state animal of New Hampshire, illustrating the vital connection between liberty and the family unit—where the principles of freedom are first taught and carried forward through generations.
In her left hand, Libertas holds a pine switch, and at her feet lies a fallen pine marked with King George’s insignia, accompanied by a broken axe. These elements refer to the Pine Tree Riots of 1732–1734, an early act of colonial defiance against British overreach. In retaliation for restrictions on harvesting white pines, local residents rebelled with dramatic resolve—lashing the king’s agents, defacing their horses, and rejecting royal authority. These events, more forceful than the Boston Tea Party, signaled the stirrings of revolution.
Above Libertas flies a naval flag used by George Washington’s fleet—bearing the motto “An Appeal to God.” This standard, raised high on her pine switch, encapsulates the deep resolve and spiritual foundation from which Liberty draws her strength.
