The 2 Oklahoma Goldback honors the virtue Benevolentia, or Kindness, by portraying the quiet strength and generational wisdom of Indigenous women. Set along the fertile riverbanks of Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation, the image centers on a Cherokee mother clad in a traditional tear dress and beaded headband. She holds a woven basket brimming with the fruits of the land: corn, beans, squash, and strawberries. These offerings represent the Three Sisters planting tradition and the Cherokee symbol of reconciliation.
In the background, a second mother tends to the crops with a papoose on her back, emphasizing the intergenerational nature of caregiving and cultural preservation. Overhead, a blooming branch of the Eastern Redbud, the Oklahoma state tree, arches gracefully, its vibrant flowers symbolizing beauty, renewal, and resilience.
The Illinois River flows behind the figures, where dugout canoes glide past an Asi house, a traditional winter dwelling of Southeastern tribes. Footprints in the soil offer a somber reference to the Trail of Tears, anchoring the scene in both remembrance and resilience. A rainbow arcs across the sky, symbolizing hope, healing, and a future shaped by love rather than loss.
This Goldback was designed with contributions from multiple tribal advisors and artists, including a registered Choctaw artist. Every element honors Oklahoma’s matrilineal traditions, where women have long held roles as caregivers, leaders, educators, and cultural stewards. Benevolentia here is not just a virtue, it is a way of life.
Each 2 Oklahoma Goldback is made with 1/500 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and comes sealed in a protective plastic sleeve.
