The Oklahoma 100 Goldback is a powerful tribute to Libertas, or Liberty, and honors one of the most storied military units in American history, the 45th Infantry Division. Formed from the Oklahoma National Guard in 1923, the 45th was composed of diverse citizen-soldiers, many from the Five Civilized Tribes: Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole. These Native warriors brought their traditions and resilience to battlefields across Europe in World War II.
The 45th landed in Sicily in 1943 and fought through Italy, France, and into Germany. On April 29, 1945, they helped liberate Dachau Concentration Camp, uncovering the horrors of the Holocaust. The artwork captures this moment of deep contrast, devastation, and hope, suffering and salvation.
At the center stands Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She walks alongside the soldiers, not ahead of them. Her gown echoes the Liberty figure from the Oklahoma State Seal and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, a coin circulated during the war. In her hand, she carries a shield bearing the Great Seal of Oklahoma, surrounded by the tribal seals of the Five Civilized Tribes. Her belt features the Osage warrior shield, peace pipe, and olive branch from the state flag, symbolizing diplomacy and strength. A broken shackle lies at her feet. Around her neck, a Star of David pendant glints in quiet remembrance.
Behind her, Sherman tanks, Willys jeeps, and fighter planes charge forward under a storm-filled sky. A bald eagle soars above, and lightning cracks in the shape of the Thunderbird, whose spirit gave the division its emblem and its fire. In the foreground, infantrymen move forward, one bearing a banner with a single word: “Libertas.”
Etched into the scene is the enduring truth: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” This note stands as a tribute to the Native nations who gave their sons, the soldiers who never returned, and the freedom they helped secure.
