10 South Dakota Goldbacks – Harmonia (Harmony)
The 10 South Dakota Goldback introduces Harmonia, the Virtue of Harmony, who makes her first appearance in this denomination. Drawing inspiration from the classical Greco-Roman goddess Artemis—protector of the hunt, the wilderness, and young women—Harmonia embodies a balance between nature and humanity. She stands poised with a drawn bow, her arrow ready to fly, signifying readiness, focus, and the pursuit of purpose.
Behind her, a crescent moon emerges from a veil of clouds—an ancient symbol of renewal and guidance through darkness. Surrounding her are the creatures of South Dakota’s diverse wildlife: Canada geese, a pronghorn antelope, mule deer antler sheds, and the state bird—the ring-necked pheasant. These elements celebrate South Dakota’s rich tradition as one of America’s premier hunting destinations.
Her attire features a belt adorned with diamonds and stylized feathers. The diamonds honor the inestimable worth of womanhood, while the feathers serve dual symbolism. They represent the region’s wide array of fowl—both ground birds like turkey and pheasant, and migratory birds such as ducks and geese—and reflect the sacred regard for feathers in ancient Greek culture, placed symbolically above the womb to exalt motherhood and feminine power.
Harmonia’s hunting dog, garlanded with a collar of laurel leaves, signifies loyalty, discipline, and the resonance of intention guided by righteous direction. The laurel wreath also crowns Harmonia herself, emblematic of triumph through unity and self-mastery.
The bow and arrow she wields are symbols rich in meaning. The bow requires disciplined training and deliberate aim, while the arrow embodies speed, focus, and direct action. Together, they represent the harmony between practice and purpose—necessary traits for achieving victory in any endeavor.
The design is further enriched by its call to “Live in Harmony”—a guiding principle for coexistence, conservation, and the mindful stewardship of our natural world. Harmonia stands as an advocate for ecological equilibrium, reflecting South Dakota’s own efforts to maintain sustainable wildlife policies and honor the interconnectedness of life.
