The Oklahoma 10 Goldback honors the virtue Unitas, or Unity, through a living celebration of Native excellence and cultural connection. Oklahoma is home to more federally recognized tribes than any other state, and the powwow is one of the most unifying and enduring traditions shared among them.
At the center of the artwork, a woman performs the Fancy Shawl Dance with elegance and power. Her shawl flutters like butterfly wings as she turns, spins, and leaps in rhythm. Behind her, a male dancer engages in the high-energy Fancy Dance. These are not imagined figures. The male dancer is Mike Pahsetopah of the Osage Nation, a world champion, cultural ambassador, and author. His daughter, Heaven, a renowned Fancy Shawl dancer, shares the center stage. Both wear authentic regalia used in ceremony and competition, grounding the piece in real tradition.
The setting comes alive with sacred symbols. A ruby-throated hummingbird darts near the dancers, suggested by Heaven herself to represent renewal. A raven carries a flowing ribbon marked “Unitas,” symbolizing wisdom and spiritual connection. Indian Blanket wildflowers bloom at their feet, and in the distance, a buffalo moves through the grasslands beneath the silhouette of the Wichita Mountains.
In the sky, black swallowtail butterflies dance, echoing the motion of the shawl. The composition, created in collaboration with Native advisors, honors both individuality and shared heritage. The message inscribed below is clear and enduring: “Walk in harmony with all things.”
