1 Wyoming Goldback – Reverentia (Reverence)
The 1 Wyoming Goldback introduces Reverentia—Latin for Reverence—making her debut appearance as a personification of respect and sacred observance. She is portrayed as a Shoshone Native American woman clad in traditional buckskin attire, standing amidst the sweeping Northeastern plains of Wyoming. Her unbound hair flows freely in the wind, symbolizing a spiritual freedom that deepens in meaning with the presence of a bald eagle perched on her arm, adorned in falconry gear. The eagle, often regarded as a divine messenger, reflects the sacred connection between creation and the Creator.
Surrounding Reverentia are radiant sunflowers—emblems of life and beauty drawn from turning toward the light. These blossoms echo the virtue’s message: “Revere what is Sacred.” In the background stands Mato Tipila, known in English as Devil’s Tower, a geological wonder and sacred site revered by many Indigenous tribes. According to Native legend, seven girls fleeing from bears prayed for deliverance, and the Great Spirit raised the formation from the ground to lift them skyward, where they became the constellation Pleiades. This legend is subtly referenced by the seven ladybugs perched on the sunflowers.
Accompanying Reverentia is an American Bison, a symbol of strength, stability, and abundance. The inclusion of both a living bison and a bison skull invites contemplation of life’s cyclical nature—birth, death, and rebirth—emphasizing the virtue’s central role in honoring all stages of existence.
