The Oklahoma 1 Goldback pays tribute to Perseverantia—Perseverance—by capturing the energy and emotion of the 1889 Land Run. On April 22 of that year, over 50,000 settlers surged into the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma to claim their piece of 160 acres. It was a moment of wild ambition, setting the foundation for communities like Oklahoma City and Guthrie, which sprang up overnight.
The composition draws from the Centennial Land Run Monument and weaves in layered narratives of Boomers, Sooners, and the Native lands that predated them. At the heart of the image is a courageous pioneer woman on horseback, her windblown hair and galloping steed evoking the urgency and hope of the land rush. She clutches a land stake marked with “Perseverantia,” her saddle etched with “The Sooner State,” a phrase reflecting both pride and controversy.
In the background, wagons and riders race across the plains under the soaring wings of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Oklahoma’s state bird. Native wildflowers bloom beneath their hooves, notably Purple Coneflowers and Blue Wild Indigos, symbolizing endurance and renewal. The composition acknowledges the complexity of the event, including its impact on Native lands, while honoring the resolve of those who forged new lives in unforgiving terrain.
The inscription at the bottom comes from 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” This verse and image together reflect the spirit of perseverance that shaped Oklahoma’s identity.
