The ½ Arizona Goldback honors Fides (the virtue of Faith) through a scene rooted in the early spiritual heritage of the Southwest. Beneath the gleaming white towers of Mission San Xavier del Bac, a young woman sits gracefully with a lit candle in her hands, symbolizing the steadfast light that guided Spanish missionaries through the rugged Arizona frontier.
Her flowing Spanish gown and cross pendant recall the mission era, when faith and community first took root in the Sonoran Desert. Around her, the land flourishes with native plants and wildlife (a roadrunner, elf owl, desert spiny lizard, and blooming cactus), each representing the resilience of life in this harsh but beautiful region. A lemon tree beside her honors the agricultural legacy of Arizona’s early missions, where fruit trees and gardens thrived as symbols of renewal.
White doves ascend overhead, a timeless emblem of peace and the Holy Spirit, while the mission’s façade, known as the “White Dove of the Desert”, stands as a testament to Arizona’s faith-filled foundations. Together, these elements express the enduring principle from Psalms 27:1: “The Lord is my light.”
