Burnished Silver Eagles were first released in 2006 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle, the world’s most popular silver bullion coin. First minted from 2006 to 2008, Burnished Uncirculated (BU) Silver Eagles were not struck in 2009 and 2010, then resumed in 2011, and have continued every year since to the delight of Collectors.

All Uncirculated silver Eagles with the Burnished finish, bear the coveted “W” mintmark from the West Point Mint, the only location that strikes this issue. Burnished coins have a matte-like satin finish that appears less shiny than their standard bullion counterpoint. Specially prepared coin blanks, known as planchets, are spun in a drum filled with countless tiny balls to remove any imperfections, giving the coin a stunning finish. These specially prepared blanks are hand-fed into the coin press one at a time and struck only once.

Burnished Silver American Eagles are specifically minted for collecting purposes. Except for the “W” mintmark, they contain 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, with the classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman on the obverse, with a contemporary American Eagle design by the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver, John Mercanti, on the reverse.
