5 Utah Goldback – Veritas (Truth)
The 5 Utah Goldback features the embodiment of Veritas, or Truth, portrayed as a courageous Utah pioneer woman. With windswept hair and resolute poise, she holds a lantern aloft, casting light toward the viewer. This radiant glow symbolizes the illuminating power of truth, which dispels uncertainty and guides the path of life. Beneath her feet, the motto “Walk in Truth” reinforces this virtue as a steady compass through the challenges of human experience.
Tucked into her apron pocket is a compass, its needle pointed westward—a direct reference to the great westward migration that brought settlers to Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847. In her left arm, she carries two sacred texts: one titled “Judah” (representing the Bible) and the other “Joseph” (symbolizing the Book of Mormon). These volumes reflect the foundational role that faith and scripture played in the pioneers’ pursuit of religious freedom.
The scene is set near a tranquil pool, into which a waterfall pours—an image signifying that truth, like fresh water, is vital for life. A deer stands at the pool’s edge, drinking from its depths, emblematic of truth’s clarity and purity. Nearby, the Christian fish symbol appears in the flowing waters. Overhead, an eagle soars across a twilight sky, serving as a guardian of truth and liberty, while the North Star glimmers beyond the clouds, a beacon of constancy even in obscured skies.
Notably, Veritas stands barefoot—a poignant reminder that the path of truth may be difficult, yet it is no less real, and its rewards all the more meaningful.
