Own a Legacy Forged in Gold and Lost at Sea

Introducing the 1849 Type I Double Eagle SS Central America Commemorative Restrike

The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848 sparked the legendary California Gold Rush—an event that transformed the American economy and defined a generation. As gold poured eastward from the frontier, the U.S. Mint faced a challenge: how to convert this massive influx of raw bullion into usable currency.

In 1849, Congress answered by authorizing a bold new denomination: the $20 Liberty Head “Double Eagle.” That same year, just two prototype coins were struck. Only one survives—a pattern coin held by the Smithsonian, widely regarded as the most valuable coin on Earth, with an estimated worth exceeding $25 million.

Recreated in Gold From the Greatest Treasure Ever Found

Fast forward to 1857: the SS Central America, a steamship loaded with Gold Rush treasure, sank in a hurricane off the Carolina coast—claiming over 400 lives and a vast fortune in gold. More than a century later, explorers recovered this legendary treasure from the ocean floor, a discovery Life Magazine dubbed “The Greatest Treasure Ever Found.” Now, for the first time, that very gold has been used to create a faithful restrike of the 1849 Double Eagle—one of America’s most iconic and unattainable coins.

“Holding this coin in your hand feels like holding a moment in time—one forged from gold, loss, and rediscovery.”
— Thomas E., Professional Numismatist

“I received the ’49 this afternoon. It’s beautifully done, just as advertised. I suppose the polishing lines in the obverse field (also visible in your photos) are there by design because they’re on the original? They give it some authenticity. I also see the Easter eggs on the reverse, including the dual dates, ‘1857’ in the scrollwork to the left of the shield and ‘2025’ to the right. Is that supposed to be the SS Central America within the oval of stars above the eagle? Nice touch; that must have been a challenge. Give my regards to the engraver for a great job.”
