The U.S Liberty and Indian Head Gold Dollars was minted from 1849 to 1889, was born out of the vast amounts of gold flowing out of the California hills during the Gold Rush. There are three Types in the $1 Gold Dollar series all designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, James Barton Longacre, who had the big task, of designing the smallest U.S. Coins. Type I (1849-1854) was only 13mm in diameter. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty with a coronet crown in her hair, encircled by 13 stars, symbolic of the 13 original colonies. The reverse simply bears the denomination 1 DOLLAR and date within an open wreath with ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ surrounding the wreath. Type II Gold Dollars (1854-1856) were a thinner but larger coin at 15 mm diameter, with a new obverse design change to an “Indian Princess Head” portrait (Small Head), and other design changes. It is by far the scarcest in the series. Type III Gold Dollars (1856-1889) with a larger head, are the most common gold dollar in the series. Collecting gold dollars can be an enjoyable pursuit, chasing history of the second half of the 19th Century.
