Historical 1,038 Oz. WW-II Silver Ingot: Recovered from the SS Gairsoppa

This exceptional 1038 ounce silver ingot was recovered from the 1941 British merchant ship, SS Gairsoppa, which was sank by a German U-boat carrying several million ounces of silver from India to the United Kingdom.

The recovery efforts by Odyssey Marine Exploration is one for the history books. It is the deepest recovery, some 3 miles deep, in history. But that’s not all, it is also the heaviest recovery in history.
While millions of ounces were unmarked silver bars which were melted and sold as bullion, there were some with markings like the one pictured here. Only 462 ingots were marked with “His Majesty’s Mint in Bombai. This is one of them. So not only is it 1,038 ounces of .999 pure silver , it is a piece of World War II history.
