1865 TYPE I $20 GOLD Liberty NGC-SSR MS62

Beautiful choice uncirculated treasure coin from the 1865 shipwreck of the SS Republic. This former Civil War blockade ship was on its way to New Orleans when it sank in a hurricane on October 25, 1865. Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the ship resting in the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean in 2003. Once the site was carefully mapped using a mosaic thousands of images the recovery efforts began. Some 51,000 gold and silver coins were recovered from the site, with most being silver Seated Liberty Half dollars. Each coin was painstakingly recovered by an underwater ROV and today the coins from this shipwreck are highly prized by collectors.
