Rare New Orleans 1858-O Type I $20 Gold. All coins from the southern branch in New Orleans are very popular and when one in AU or better is seen they garner attention from both investors and collectors. The 1858-O had a mintage of only 35,250 and is the 10th rarest of the 43 Type I Double Eagles issues. Average grade for survivors for the date are in the VF-XF grades with most coins showing heavy abrasion. The coins were minted during a time of robust economic activity and so it makes perfect sense that most survivors show high signs of circulation.

The finest graded specimen is a NGC MS63 and realized $164,500 in public auction in January 2015.
