1833 Capped Bust Quarter 25C Type II (Small Size 1828-1838)

NGC PF65 Cameo

Mintage: 5

The 1833 25C as a proof is a major U.S. rarity with a high R-7 rarity rating (3-5 known). The example offered here is an outstanding gem specimen grading PF65-Cameo which is the highest grade known to exist.

In the past decades, proof-like Capped Bust Quarters were often described as proofs. However, the designation as a proof has changed significantly as the works of numismatic scholars became much more traceable. Additionally, the advent of research by the major grading services have contributed greatly to the confirmation of a proof example. Only a few proof 1833 quarters have been certified by NGC and PCGS. A very small number of proofs are known with notable scholars putting the total mintage at a mere five coins.

The popularity of early proof coinage is well documented. Prices realized for decades reaffirm this popularity. When these Early American rarities do surface, bidding is enthusiastic and brisk.
