Description
The 1776 Continental Dollars are important early coinage celebrating the birth of the brand-new nation of the United States. Continental Dollars are rich in American symbolism, using designs provided by one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, and David Rittenhouse, the first Director of the U.S. Mint.
Obverse Features 3 Rings…
In the center is a sundial with the sun shining above, and the words, “Mind Your Business” …meaning take care of your business, and your business will take care of you. The middle ring has the Latin word “Fugio,” symbolizing that “Time Flies,” reinforcing the message to take care of business while you can. The outer ring has ‘Continental Currency’ with the date ‘1776,’ in large, bold capital letters, declaring America’s independence.
Reverse Also Has 3 Rings…
With the declaration, ‘We Are One,’ boldly in the center, ‘American Congress’ around the middle ring, surrounded by 13 interlocking rings in the outer border, each bearing the name of one of the thirteen colonies, a message symbolic of the Young Republic unity against the struggle with Britain.
