Gold American Eagle Special Releases
Gold Eagle Special Releases by the U.S. Mint are considered rare and prized by Collectors. The first Gold Eagle Special Release was for the 20th Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program in 2006. The U.S. Mint released a one-ounce 2006-W Reverse Proof Gold Eagle in a 3-coin set.
The Reverse Proof would be the first and only of its kind in the American Gold Eagle series, plus it had one of the lowest mintages of only 10,000 strikes, making this issue an instant rarity. Another Special Release was the 2020 American Eagle One Ounce Gold Proof Coin, issued to symbolize the 75th anniversary of the victory in World War II, by incorporating a special “V75” privy mark on the obverse.
The American Gold Eagle series has had the same design since its inception in 1986, but that all changed in 2021, with a new design for the 35th anniversary. The classic obverse features a version of Liberty first used on the 1907 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle with a refreshed facelift, and a totally new redesigned reverse, features a close-up left profile of an American Gold Eagle, starting a new chapter in the Gold Eagle series.
