Burnished Gold Eagle Coins
Burnished American Eagle gold coins were first released in 2006, on the 20th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle coin series, intended for Collectors because of their low mintages and beauty.
Burnished Gold Eagles are minted in the same way that proof coins are, with polished planchets (blanks) that give the coin a soft frosted matted finish with a 3D-like appearance of the design floating above the contrast of the deeply mirrored backdrop, creating a more detailed appearance in the strike and enhancing the color of the coin.
Burnished Gold Eagles are highly desirable and collected in mint state and proof condition. Burnished gold coins are minted at the West Point Mint in New York, with the “W” mintmark located just beneath the date, whereas American Eagle Bullion Coins do not have a mintmark. Initially, burnished coins were minted for each size variety (1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz,). In 2009, only one-ounce coins were minted due to a delay in proof and burnished Gold Eagle production. Because Burnished Gold Eagles boast low mintages, there is a high Collector demand for these very special issues.
